We knew we wanted to work with Irene and Andre the minute we saw one of their beautiful houses. Their homes have an unmistakable look of modern mixed with traditional beauty. Urban Sanctuaries managed all the dealings with different suppliers and the legal requirements with the many different departments. They took care of our building project from plans to keys.

Andre and his team were fast, neat and meticulous, taking no shortcuts - we were amazed at how quickly the building came to life. Then Irene swooped in and our dream materialised with her incredible eye for style and ability to think of the smallest detail. She spent time getting to know us, our needs and wishes, and turned them into more than we could have imagined.

Living in a brand new home is a privilege and working on this project with Irene and Andre was exciting and fun because they took care of everything.

[Title]Renovation 101 - From derelict ruin to iconic Karoo farmstead

Once a gem of the Karoo, bustling with family and guests, the house fell into disuse and stood derelict for 32 years. Dassies, buck and other critters inhabited the rooms and ceiling, evident by the thick layer of poop covering the floors and running down the walls.  The easy and logical option was to tear it down and build a new house in its place.

Our very first foray into building was being told we had to build our own staff house in Kenya.  Armed with a basic floor plan, some understanding of reading plans and lots of gumption, we set about building the staff house.  We soon discovered that there was no Building Supply Store within a 300km radius so EVERYTHING had to be produced on site using only rudimentary hand tools.
