Renovation 101 - From derelict ruin to iconic Karoo farmstead

Once a gem of the Karoo, bustling with family and guests, the house fell into disuse and stood derelict for 32 years.  Dassies, buck and other critters inhabited the rooms and ceiling, evident by the thick layer of poop covering the floors and running down the walls.  The easy and logical option was to tear it down and build a new house in its place.

Undaunted by the current state of the house, the new owners embarked on a journey of a lifetime - determined to bring the house into the 21st Century whilst salvaging as much of her heritage as possible.

The process entailed peeling back the house to bare bones, exposing the building material of yesteryear - thick mud brick walls with river rock foundations.  Reclaimed floor boards were sourced and existing floor boards uplifted, re laid and re-finished.  A new oversized farm kitchen and scullery, large enough to cater for the district, was installed featuring a family size everyday kitchen braai and a pantry to die for.   Further modern day staples such as an entertainment room, pool and deck were added.

The final result is a truly iconic Karoo farmhouse that acknowledges her past but has adapted and evolved to accommodate modern day living.  Once again the welcoming sounds of laughter, children’s voices and barking dogs resonate through her walls.
